Innovative cervical device used for first time in US gynaecological procedures
The Swiss-based start-up Aspivix has announced the first gynaecological procedures performed with its innovative cervical device in the US.
The product, a suction-based cervical device known as carevix™, aims to reduce pain and bleeding during transcervical procedures.
It is designed as an alternative to the traditional tenaculum, a surgical instrument commonly used in gynaecology.
Aspivix has revealed that several women in the US were the first patients to benefit from carevix™, in a move that could redefine gynaecology.
The procedures, the first IUD and transcervical procedures performed with the device as part of the carevix™ Ambassador Program, were performed by Dr Alissa M. Conklin, an assistant professor of clinical obstetrics and gynaecology at Indiana University School of Medicine.
Dr Conklin said the procedures were conducted with ease and provided excellent suction and traction, allowing adequate access without difficulties. The patient reported significantly less pain and no bleeding compared to previous procedures involving traditional tenaculum use.
“The suction was perfectly adequate and easy to use, even in a non-traditional position. Carevix™ allowed us to easily place the IUD when I otherwise could not without cervical traction,” Conklin explained.
“When suction was released, there was no bleeding, so we were able to immediately trim the strings and remove the speculum which makes the procedure shorter. The patient had an IUD before and said the device made her experience so much better than it was the last time.”
One patient shared: “It was preferable to prior IUD placement because there was essentially no pain. I am glad that research to lessen women’s pain is being conducted.”
Another patient said: “Dr Conklin explained that the common tool [the tenaculum] has been around for a while, so knowing the design of the old tool and comparing it to the one of the new device made me feel like I made the right choice.”
The carevix™ Ambassador Program allows OB/GYNs, midwives and nurses across 12 centers in the US, France, Sweden, Switzerland and Germany to use carevix™ in routine gynaecological procedures to provide a better experience for women.
According to Ikram Guerd, US managing director at Aspivix, the program showcases the company’s commitment to innovation, fostering collaboration and improving patient outcomes.
